How developers really deal with bugs
link: https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-07-19-a-devs-eye-view-of-bugs
[Excerpt]
Everybody knows bugs. There are funny ones and stupid ones. There are annoying ones and actually-damaging ones. But however they manifest themselves, bugs sit right between a game's maker and its player, a sudden manifestation of mistakes that have been made, a crack in the simulation, a bump right back down to Earth.
The player side of the experience of bugs is straightforward. They raise amusement, irritation and sometimes spluttering anger, and they should all be fixed. But players don't really know so much about the developer experience. That's despite the relationship between players and developers growing closer than ever over the past 10 or so years. In the era of internet-delivered patches, Early Access and the rise of indie development, players are caught in the swirl of the development process as they pore over changelogs and offer feedback.

Dislikes the Sea, but Will Venture Upon It If Necessary
Dislikes the Sea, but Will Venture Upon It If Necessary
BY GREG PAK
This was supposed to be hilarious.
But at the age of 49, I’m sitting at my desk staring at hundreds of pages of character sheets, drawings, histories, blueprints, maps, Centaurian language notes, castle budgets, and constitutional documents I created for my imaginary Dungeons and Dragons world as a kid in the 1980s, and I’m overwhelmed.
Individually, every document is hilarious, full of sentences like, “The unicorns, primarily, pay no tax and roam freely.” I’m absolutely delighted with the kid-me who wrote hundreds of sentences like, “Goblins listed as citizens are a small tribe of neutral druidic goblins. They are generally accepted by the rest of the community, for they have none of the violent tendencies of their evil cousins.” I could write for days about all of this glorious detail and worldbuilding and how it clearly paved the way for me as an adult to write books like Planet Hulk, Kingsway West, and Mech Cadet Yu.
But the deeper I dig into these notebooks, the more stressed I get, a heady mix of embarrassment and protectiveness for the boy I was and the adult I’ve become.

Is Kawamori's Macross, Your Macross?
Excerpt:
I don’t make a custom of regarding quotations from the creator about the subject work as definitive interpretations of the created product. I don’t think it’s unimportant either, but no I don’t privilege it as “Word of God” as a practice.
However, there are certain assumptions I can’t do without: when the production team says show X is a sequel to show W, I believe that the story in show X is part of the continuity of show W. The events in both story happen in the same world at different times.
I cannot make the same assumptions for the Macross franchise.

We are not on the same page anymore
As I grow older, I find that I'm not on the same page with my friends anymore.
Not on morals, society, kids, policies, or politics.
I cannot complain about parents using prams as battering rams, cos those with kids will say I don't understand their hardships, never mind that I wasn't talking about them.
Cannot say irresponsible people shouldn't have kids, cos what's wrong with people having kids?
Cannot share my friends' glee in picking lost money or items, as I believe attempts should be made to return the items, or leave them alone as the rightful owner might return for them.
So lonely, in a way

Dream: Collector, Inventor, Pig
Dreams as they go don't make sense. I just thought that it's amusing to log them and read at a future date. Readers might want to skip this entry.
[Dream]
At a rich man's party
Henchmen reports items stolen
The collector explained in his room
He steals food, that are not to be eaten
Me, a nameless entity
In a densely packed, light factory area
Entered a shop, selling Smurfs-like models
Shop lit w warm light, had a small rounded interior with the store lady inside
Told her a mysterious collector coming, often paying high value for the best stuffs
We reviewed the list for a while
Me, a middle aged inventor on the run
Was in a double decker london bus, traveling along a beach road
Gal hero, known to self earlier was on the move with her German shepherd dog
Both had fast arcade like dashing speed, when navigating pedestrian crossings
Left the bus and joined her
Me, a middle aged inventor on the run from zombie apocolyse
What skills you have, she asked.
None, I said. she don't have to know my computer skills
Join in, she said
Is that your best speed? I said as I matched hers
Me, an observer
3 laps later, view panned to show her behind the middle aged inventor
Inventor smiled knowing that he won because she was already tired to begin with
Gal looked pleased, gained approval of the man.
Me, a middle aged inventor on the run
Dog was in hyperactive mode, running round and round the carpark
Gal was pulling on his chain but no avail
I added my weight, but was pulled along too
Dog then crashed into covered stuffs in the middle, and got entangled with a massive cow
cow has a regular head, but a massive bull-sized body and no visible legs
Both cow and dog were frightened; the dog trapped closed to the cow, behind its head
Me, an observer
Gal approached cow and dog, trying to unlock the chain, agaitating the cow
Inventor sent his little pig, who snuggled against the cow, calming it
Dog was released, visibly tired
View panned to pig, now visibly big. my thoughts drifted to how the inventor raised it as a farmer, to sell it to the market
Inventor holds the pig, rolls it into a few slices of ham in his hands.
I make things, he said, to be eaten. He then bit off the ham

Dream: 201402??
Had a dream where my supervisor was critiquing my codes. I counter argued that mine is the most efficient method, and she agreed. Then she gave me an advice that my stuffs lack polish, and others won't see my quality.
Woke up feeling happy. How I wish to have a supervisor like that.

What makes a good place, good?
Years later, and I think, "Should I have stayed?"
Young and dissatisfied, I wanted to get what life owed me.
When the pursuits of wealth turns empty, then what do I want out of life?
Now, almost a decade later, I wonder, "Should I have stayed?"

Dream: Evil dragon and time travel
Dreams as they go don't make sense. I just thought that it's amusing to log them and read at a future date. Readers might want to skip this entry.
[dream: act 1]
In long shop house area, much like Tanjong Pagar. Waiting for someone.
[/dream: act 1]
[dream: act 2]
In unfamiliar shopping center. Had an appointment with an NBA player at 12 noon. It's 1.45 pm and he's very late. Wanted to not wait for him, like what Lincoln would have done.
[/dream: act 2]
[dream: act 3]
Evil Chinese dragons(note1) attacking Chinese opera houses. I was shown a map of a web of river valleys with settlements populating them, each having an opera house. I have went backward in time, just before the second attack.
[/dream: act 3]
[dream: act 4]
An elderly man was collecting tax/license fee from the opera owners. He commented that their ticket rates are very cheap. I know instinctively that this was just before modernisation forced prices down and opera house out of business. I got to know the price is $1.50. I agreed, "Very cheap".
[/dream: act 4]
[dream: act 5]
In a small flat. Younger versions of my parents-in-law are eating egg omelettes and pork cutlets. Had a thought that if I could stop them from eating unhealthy food now, I could prevent their health problems later. Saw an elderly woman to the right of me.
"Dua Ah Ma(note2)", I greeted her in Hokkien.
"What Dua Ah Ma? There's no such thing", she replied in the same dialect.
Pointing to my mother-in-law, I said, "She's Ah Ma. You're Dua Ah Ma. I came from the future".
"What? I don't know you".
Another voice spoke up. In place of my father-in-law. A younger version of my maternal grandmother sat there. She was her plumb self as I remembered her then. She said, "As he said before to me, once he speaks up, you'll recognise his voice".
That's right, I thought. I told her that when I time traveled the last time(note3), but that event has not happened yet...
I asked, "How could you know? It hasn't happened yet".
"I don't know". She replied. "I just do.".
[/dream: act 5]
Ah... I missed you.
Footnotes:
note1: In cultural history, Chinese dragons are forces of good, and not evil.
note2: A bad translation. I was addressing my mother-in-law "Grandmother", and my grand mother-in-law as Great Grandmother".
note3: Dream self had this "memory" that he(myself) met his maternal grandmother in his time travels, and she was convinced of his identity. However, that "event" is supposedly years after this one.

The taste of an oyster

This is an excerpt from Rowan Jacobsen’s A Geography of Oysters: The Connoisseur’s Guide to Oyster Eating in North America, Bloomsbury USA (September 4, 2007). Copyright Rowan Jacobsen.
.
.
An amazing amount of ink has been spilled over the years in an effort to nail the taste of oysters. The essayist Michel de Montaigne compared them to violets. Eleanor Clark mentioned their “shock of freshness.” M. F. K. Fisher was one of many to point out that they are “more like the smell of rock pools at low tide than any other food in the world.” To the French poet Léon-Paul Fargue, eating one was “like kissing the sea on the lips.” For James Beard, they were simply “one of the supreme delights that nature has bestowed on man. ... Oysters lead to discussion, to contemplation, and to sensual delight. There is nothing quite like them.” Something about them excites the palate, and the mind, in a way that other shellfish don’t. You don’t see cookbooks devoted to scallops, and you’d never have found M. F. K. Fisher writing Consider the Clam.
Yet something about oysters resists every attempt to describe them.
If we didn’t love them so, it wouldn’t matter, but there’s a tension and energy in the fact that we adore them, many others do not, and that we struggle to explain this mysterious love. The proliferating category of oyster adjectives—cucumber, citrus, melon, copper, smoke—is useful, but doesn’t cut to the core. At some level, it’s not about taste or smell at all. Because an oyster, like a lover, first captures you by bewitching your mind..

My turn
Now it's my turn.
I dare not say I don't deserve it, yet I feel victimised.
I take responsibility for my faults, not unforeseen acts that slipped us all.
For your distaste, I say the feeling is mutual.

What is one's worth in life?
We started our education as soon as we're aware.
20 years later, we have to work else we'll starve.
10 years after that, we have to get married, else we're losers, and doomed to loneliness.
If we get kids, then we support them till they're old enough to get married, and more.
If our partner pass away, we go on with life, crippled.
Who or what are we living for?
Our tummy?
Our kids?
Our partners?
Ourselves?
