It has been 4 years since our first Malacca trip.
Much has changed, sadly, though surprises reward the patient ones.

无印良品《我找你找了好久》; I finally found you after a long search.

This was the song that introduced me to the group during my polytechnic days.
Enjoy.

I have church on Sunday...

Fair enough.  Though whenever plans come up, this comes up as an immovable block of stone.
I question the enthusiasm that you showed for the event, which I had kept you in mind for so many years.
I wonder.  Does missing a session makes one a lesser person?  If so, does going to church on another day lessen the experience?
Your public display of piousness is admirable.  I question your clarity.

Poisoning the well

Poisoning the well (or attempting to poison the well) is a rhetorical device where adverse information about a target is pre-emptively presented to an audience, with the intention of discrediting or ridiculing everything that the target person is about to say.

My loves

Games
They suck you in.  You puff and puff on them, feeling bliss along the way.  Kinda like a smoking addiction, if you ask me.

Books
If games suck you in, books wrap you in.  You won't have withdrawal, but once you're in it, the sun can rise and fall and you won't be aware.  Sure, games does that too but the immersion is on a different level.

The other half.
Games + Books.  Enough said.

Selling oneself

Over the last few years, I got a nagging feeling that my resume is not up to scratch.  Yet, whenever I open up the file, everything looks in order.  "It's functional and detailed", I thought, and filed it away.

Recently, I've been doing some revision on it.  The more I look over, the more I trim.  Stuffs that I used to boast are now laughingly simple to me, and not worthy of mention.  Still, something is amiss; I can't put my finger on it.

After several phone interviews, I had an idea of what I'm lacking.  Date of birth; experience in functional and technical skills; full project cycles; summary of what each job was about; expected salary; summary of skillsets.  I will work on this soon.

NYT: A Catholic Classmate Rethinks His Religion

JW: This is not "safe" for FB consumption, so I'm exercising my right of expression in posting it here.  I found the story of the classmate in his soul search thought provoking, so I'm sharing it here.  This however, is not indicative of my support/or hate against any religions and sexual orientations.
Excerpt:
During our recent correspondence, he said he was sorry for any impression he might have given me in college that he wasn't open to the candid discussions we have now. I corrected him: I owed the apology - for misjudging him.
He grew up in the South, in a setting so homogenous and a family so untroubled that, he said, he had no cause to question his parents' religious convictions, which became his. He said that college gave him cause, starting with me. Sometime during freshman year, he figured out that I was gay, and yet I didn't conform to his prior belief that homosexuals were "deserving of pity for their mental illness." I seemed to him sane and sound.
He said that we talked about this once - I only half recall it - and that the exchange was partly why he remembered me two decades later.
Questioning his church's position on homosexuality made him question more. He read the Bible "front to back and took notes of everything I liked and didn't like," he said.
"There's a lot of wisdom there," he added, "but it's a real mistake not to think about it critically."

Frustrated with the state of things

This had been in the brew for about 2 years.  You think things can't get any worse, and then fate proves you wrong.
I've never had such a low in my life, yet it's good to have supportive friends and a spouse who argues on your side.  And for a few seconds, you do agree with them.
However, it matters not what the truth is, but what the larger proportion of people believe in.  I believe it is time.  You can't beat them all.
Sometimes the way to advance, is to retreat.

Real steel

A movie I wanted to watch, for Hugh Jackman.  One that I'm wary of, because an actor does not make a movie and the synopsis was screaming, "Lame!"
Got to admit it now, it's fairly good, if you treat it as an underdog-inspiration movie.  The human parts suck, as expected.

Karma

For the record, I don't believe in karma; I believe in retributive justice.
Not that I act it out, but that's what I hope for anything.
Some days, when someone does me wrong, I absorb it and say, "it's on his karma".
That doesn't mean I believe in karma, but in the sanctity of his soul.

What I've been doing?

I've posted much less in my 2 blogs for the past few months.
My father had an operation, so the family have been shuttling between hospitals, day-care centre, and now, between two homes: me parent's and my new "house".
Even though the amount of time spent on the actual caring is low, the co-ordination and traveling do take up a large percentage of my time.  Sometimes, uncharacteristically, I drop off to sleep after reading a page of story, or two.
So while it's true that my wife and I had tarried in our renovation plans, it's not fair to put blame and labels without understanding the background.

The rights of a consumer

Had two unhappy incidents recently over services rendered.

One, we went to a bar and were seated outside.  The seats were wet so we requested for a change.  However, the waiter refused, "If I change for you, I'll have to offer customer who come, wet seats.  You get what I mean?"
Sorry, I don't.  You're saying that you are going to give us wet seats, while your imaginary future customers will get served better?

Two, I directed my taxi to my lobby.  Upon sighting the main road across a block, he questioned why I didn't get off from the main road and walk in?  "Some drivers hate coming into carparks like this, and having to get out".
Well, if I wanted to walk, I wouldn't have taken a taxi.

Much have been said of demanding customers.  Yet, what was said of customers who were given bad services and kept quiet about it?  I did keep quiet.  On reflection, I wouldn't accept such crap in future.

Yahoo Mail upgrade

I had been a long time supporter of Yahoo Mail.
But admit it, they've been sitting on their laurels for too long and lost their standing.
Where Google Mail had multiple selection, I had to select my spam mails in Yahoo Mail, one by one.
Where Google Mail allows you to drag and define your calendar appointments, I had to fiddle with the start and end time in Yahoo Mail.

Now, they have a massive upgrade, with link up to Facebook and Google+.
Question is, is it too little, too late?

Queue cutters

I was stuck by the road for 20 minutes, cabs all showing red lights.  Two ladies turned up and parked themselves 15m ahead of me, chatting and paying me scant attention to my killer stare.

Muttering under my breath, I walked past them by 3m and showed them my back, twirling my umbrella in play.

I was kinda hoping that they would challenge me, so I was kinda disappointed.

Dream: Porting

Dreams as they go don't make sense. I just thought that it's amusing to log them and read at a future date. Readers might want to skip this entry.

[dream: act 1]
In a kind of "place" where we're studying for "something". Present were my sec school classmates, uni classmates and ex colleagues and some current colleagues. After studying, we'll go back to our dorms via a series of branching doors.
[/dream: act 1]

[dream: act 3]
Vincent was angry that I got classmate X's help and scored 1st in mathematics. Told him that I had a history of roller coaster grades in mathematics. "It could have been anyone, like Yuna. I just needed help because I wasn't paying attention in class". Vincent was satisfied.
[/dream: act 3]

[dream: act 4]
Travel can be made via "porting", someone has to accept your transfer at a booth and once payment is made, you instantly appear at the booth. Payment is made via pre-paid cards. These cards card used for MMO subscriptions, porting and telephone phones. Just ported my baby over to the amusement park and told that I could now upgrade my card after having used $1000 in total. The upgraded card now offers porting at 1000kbps. We accepted.
Checked the card and found that we only have a few cents left. Guess no MMO for baby for a while...
[/dream: act 4]

[dream: act 5]
Walking back by the series of branching doors. Realised baby not with me so let the others go ahead. Found her 2 doors back. She grumbled at not checking for her and I put my arm around her shoulder, "Baby.."
[/dream: act 5]

[dream: act 6]
In american-style alley, with Demonic-dog howls...
[/dream: act 6]

Woke by alarm (demonic-dog howls). To wake baby and go for breakfast now.

A short get-away

That was relaxing; I love you, baby

Silent Taxi Drivers

When it's late at night, my transportation would be cabs.
Getting on, I said, "Hello, going to +(destination)"
The driver would start driving without acknowledgement.

"Turn left here".
The cab turns.
"Turn right here"
The cab turns.
"Stop here"
The cab stops.
"How much?"
He displays the total with the meter.
"Okay..."

It is somewhat uncomfortable.  I can dispense with smiles and "Yes, Sir".  Silence makes me feel like I'm driving the car with my own voice.  Is he blaming me for keeping me away from his bed?  Does he resent the need to serve?  Am I missing something?

Wedding banquets

Asked to death when I'm gonna get married..
Asked to death when I'm gonna get a flat..
Asked to death when I'm gonna do my renovations..
Asked to death when I'm gonna hold my banquet..

Seriously, do you enjoy grand banquets for its own sake?
Have you come across small cosy gatherings?
Do you find banquets a waste of time and money?

I do enjoy attending my friends' weddings,
but this is an age of one-upsmanship.
How the norms are spiraling out of control

I hope that when mine comes,
there is time for everyone.

Low Fertility Rate and Cost of Living

Fertility Rate is such a useful tool.  It can be used by the Government to justify a restoration of the immigration rate.  It can be used by mothers to demand payouts for their unborn child, even though they have already *made* the decision to have one.  It can be used by the Opposition to cry about the Cost of Living.

We are perhaps one of the most prosperous Island states in the world.  That comes at the price of a high inflation rate and a volatile economy.  Most newly formed families cannot afford to rely on a single source of income.  Inflation will erode their earnings over time, and what is job security these days?

Perhaps that's the ill of a modern society.  We're on a canoe, in a mad ride, and the way to survive is to plow ahead.

Anime I'm watching or have watched

1. Marvel Ironman
JW: The early episodes are stand alone and the show came to an end too quickly.
Disappointing.
http://jwitworker.blogspot.com/2010/10/ironman-goes-japan.html

2. Code Geass
JW: It has its typical share of teenager-with-special-powers, and eye candies for boys.  The dark tone of this anime later warmed up.  I liked the deep thought behind the strategies, but the impossibly fast and powerful Gundams Knightmares put me off.
Overall, I enjoyed this series.
http://codegeass.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

3. Kemono no Souja
JW: Was hunting for a new anime to watch and came across this.  Slow paced story telling and drawn with simple lines.  It tells the story of a little girl working behind the lines with her mother, in a land guarded by giant lizards called Touda.
Looks promising =)

Push Your Automated Android to Awesome Heights with These Tasker Setups

It's an app to allow you to setup automated tasks, if you can dream it.  For example, you could set your handphone to silent once you check into a library.  Or you could lower your phone's volume when you're in your house and louder if you're outside.
What interests me in this article is they described how you could set it up to reduced the frequency your sms are checked, thereby saving battery power.

All I Want For Christmas lyrics

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There's just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you.

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day
I just want you for for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you
You baby

I won't ask for much this Christmas
I won't even wish for snow
I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to
Hear those magic reindeer click
'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for Christmas is you
You

All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me the one I really need
Won't you please bring my baby to me

Oh, I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just want to see my baby
Standing right outside my door
Oh I just want him for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas is
You

All I want for Christmas is you baby
All I want for Christmas is you baby.

Are COV prices really coming down?

Whenever I mention my oncoming purchase, people are sure to comment on the steep Cash-Over-Valuation.

"I hear prices are already coming down" (I've heard that prices have gone down)

"Are they?"

These are the median COV values posted by HDB.  They're amazing low, considering how most units I've visited, got sold for more than $60k. Nevertheless, even if their maths is flawed, as long as they are consistent in their calculation, we have a picture.

doodling on the walls...
playing with real dough...

lying on the floor...
bouncing the ping pong ball against the wall...
going to the playground...
staring at the ceiling lights, till they get imprinted...
staring at the rain...
launching paper boats in the drain...
tapping into private radio channels...
turning the living room into a "snow-field"...
play out imaginary adventures with my toys...
construct a lego town and stare at it till dusk falls.  Set a torchlight behind it as night falls and stare at it some more...
read the entire collection of ladybird books at home (again)...
dream of a house filled with train tracks...

Eat, Pray, Love

*Warning: Mild spoilers alert*

Watched the show with ST last night.
Supposedly based on a true story, the movie contains some like-able and inspirational characters. It took its own sweet time to tell the story, which was fine with me.  Julia Roberts put up a good performance and the lines were pretty good, most of the time.
What didn't smell right was that despite the loving attention given to the preparation, cooking and eating of food; not a single bit appealed to me.  For all the mediation she had done; I don't feel her becoming more spiritual.  The love part? Eye contact; hug; sex.  Pfft.

Over the years, I've learned to be less of a critic and accept these kinda of movies as a weekday show.  The good performance by Julia Roberts and two old men made it passable.  A wonderful companion made the evening wonderful. =]

Scary dream

Had a scary dream.  Was back with my army mates, carrying stores and washing ourselves at a common bath-pool.  Foo was worried that the water I fed him was dirty, but I pointed out that he was in it anyway.  Then we were told that we're going to have keep the stores we've drawn, cos we're NSMen.
Woke up with a shiver.  That was scary; I didn't want to keep those stores.

Joe the doc

Joe got to serve X number of scheduled patients of day.
When he does his rounds, patients call to him, he has to attend them.
Sometimes their wounds fester, he has to attend them.
At the end of the day, he couldn't meet his target and resolved to work harder.
"I must serve X number of scheduled patients today"
But the same thing happens.
And again.
And again.
What is Joe to do?

We signed our OTP with our agent on the evening of 28th Sep.  This was made known to the seller party.
They updated their unit for sales, presumably on the afternoon of 28th Sep.

Someone had their BlackBerry stolen.  They message their own unit to appeal for a return.  All they got was a smiley before being deleted / blocked.
Why do people theive when their bread and butter is not at stake?

Kiasu?

Kiasu?
that's too broad a brush.

there's greed - to the point that they must have all the comforts their money paid for
there's selfish - no one else shall have it
there's rude - no one shall separate me from their heaven bestowed gift of a seat.

read more: http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/samsung-galaxy-s-android-2-2-update-coming-in-september-708120

Samsung has announced the Galaxy S will be upgraded to Android 2.2 next month (Sep), and will land on all networks.

This means we won't see a repeat of the staggered firmware release that is currently plaguing the HTC Desire update.

Six degrees of separation

Clicking randomly among Chinese-looking friends of my friends, I found that many of them are linked to me in some way.  Either I have too many Facebook "friends"; or my friends have too many links; or Singapore is just too damn small.

Development charges to go up - a cooling measure?

Our press has always been supportive of our government; the news they publish will be in tune with our leaders' wish to improve the mood of the people, or to caution them against overspending.
In the recent flurry of feel-good reports, I noted a curious article.  It says that as a further move to curb spiraling prices, development charges will go out.  The article went on to say that as a result of the recent changes, developers will hold back new projects.

Come on.  Seriously?
